UMA urges Ugandan govt bodies to use local textiles
The Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) has urged all the government departments and ministries to buy textiles produced in Ugandan local industries, to help increase the production and consumption of local fabrics and growth of the textile industry, New Vision reported.
UMA wants the government departments to buy textile products that include school uniforms, socks, t-shirts, etc.
The executive director of UMA, Ssebagala Kigozi, during his visit to the Sigma Knitting industries and Chinese Sunbelt Textiles Limited, said that the government departments like the Army, Prisons, and Police should buy uniforms and socks from the local textile industries because they are of better quality compared to the imported textiles.
He also promised to encourage the leaders of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), Prisons, and Police to use Ugandan textiles, so that they can appreciate locally manufactured textiles.
Kigozi said that he planned to meet the IGP, Gen. JeJe Odongo from ministry of Defence and Johnson Byabashaija from Prisons to help the textile manufacturers.
The managing director of Sigma Knitting industries, Anant Parmar said that
Sigma Knitting industries are into manufacturing uniforms and socks, while Chinese Sunbelt Textiles Limited are into manufacturing and designing bed sheets and curtains.
