Bangladesh seeks US govt support to promote RMG sector

The Bangladesh Ambassador to US, Mohammad Ziauddin, has sought help from the US Government for promoting the readymade garment (RMG) sector of Bangladesh, BSS news agency reported.
Mr. Ziauddin, in a discussion with US Congresswoman (Democrat-Queens), Grace Meng, mentioned about the tremendous impact of the RMG industry in the economy of Bangladesh, which is also working towards the empowerment of women in Bangladesh.
The Bangladesh Ambassador gave a general overview on the initiatives and the programmers being implemented by the present Government of Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
He also briefed Ms. Meng about the actions taken by the present Government since the Rana Plaza tragedy, that cover a broad range of areas including legal and institutional reforms, administrative actions, launching special programs, fire and building safety measures, follow-up and monitoring. The Rana Plaza tragedy occurred in April 2013, where an eight-story building, housing several garment factories collapsed in Savar, near Bangladesh’s capital.
Mr. Ziauddin discussed about the concrete actions taken by the Government of Bangladesh towards improving the occupational safety and workers’ rights situation.
Congresswoman Grace Meng said the Government of US is following the developments in the Bangladesh with lots of interest, and added that she expects more interactive dialogue in the sector between the manufacturers and the workers.
RMG is a strategic sector for the Bangladeshi economy, with an estimated 3,500 export factories in operation, providing employment for over 4.2 million workers.
