The area under cotton sowing for 2016-17 crop year has decreased in north Indian states, especially Haryana,
In Haryana, cotton are has declined 14 per cent to 5 lakh hectares in 2016-17 crop year compared to 5.8 lakh hectares last year, as per the latest data.

In Uttar Pradesh too, area under cotton cultivation has dipped 19 per cent to 0.17 lakh hectares compared to 0.21 hectares in the corresponding period of previous year.
Thus, the total area under cotton in these three states has fallen to 7.43 lakh hectares.
The drop in area under cotton is mainly due to farmers shifting to other crops after incurring huge losses owing to whitefly pest attack last year
