Peru's textile & apparel sector employs over 250,000
The textile and apparel industry in Peru directly employs more than 250,000 persons, minister of foreign trade and tourism Magali Silva has said.
“We produce one of the world's finest cotton varieties, such as Peruvian Pima, also included among Peru's flagship products,” Silva said at the opening of the 12th Textile Exporters' Forum.
Peru also produces 80 per cent of the world's fine alpaca fibres, the minister said. She added that the Peruvian textile and garment industry caters to several global clothing brands such as Lacoste, Max Mara, Polo Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, Ragman, Armani, and others.
The Textile Exporters' Forum, organised by Peru's Exporters Association (Adex), is aimed at enabling local businesses learn about business opportunities offered by emerging markets, and the latest fashion trends.
Since last year, Peru has become the second largest knitted clothing supplier, after Mexico, among Pacific Alliance countries (includes Chile and Columbia).
Peru has also overtaken China to become top t-shirts supplier to Brazil. (RKS)
